Submit Review5-BrdU is a synthetic thymidine analog; incorporated into DNA during replication. Used in assays for cell proliferation. Replaces Oct-4 in transcription factor-mediated reprogramming of somatic cells and can be used in small molecule cocktail to generate ciPSCs.
5-BrdU is also offered as part of the Tocriscreen Stem Cell Library. Find out more about compound libraries available from Tocris.

I used BrdU to monitor cell proliferation in the mouse brain. Preparation of stock solutions of the drug is performed with warm (50ºC) sterile saline. It is advisable to keep the solution for 1h in the water bath at 50ºC with sonicator turned ON to complete solubilization. Aliquots can be kept at -80ºC until the use. The drug was diluted in saline 0.9% and injected i.p. (100 mg/kg). Intracardial perfusion was done 4 h later and BrdU was immunolabeled with an anti-BrdU antibody. The image displays that BrdU is present in the nucleus of the newly formed cells.
