Neuromedin U Receptors

Neuromedin U (NMU) receptors are a group of G_q/11-protein-coupled receptors that are currently divided into two subtypes: NMU₁ and NMU₂. The two subtypes have distinct tissue distributions: NMU₁ is expressed in the periphery (especially in the gastrointestinal tract), whilst NMU₂ is expressed in the central nervous system (especially in the substantia nigra, medulla oblongata and pontine reticular formation).

NMU receptors mediate diverse biological effects including contraction of the uterus, peripheral vasoconstriction causing hypertension and activation of the HPA axis resulting in decreased food intake via the CRH system. The human genes encoding NMU₁ and NMU₂ are located on chromosomes 2q37.1 and 5q33.1 respectively.
