Submit ReviewLithium carbonate is a mood stabilizer; thought to act by reducing catecholamine neurotransmitter concentration, through an effect on the Na+/K+ ATPase pump. Effective in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Inhibits GSK-3 in vivo.

Guinea pig ventricular cardiomyocytes were patched and stimulated at a 1 Hz frequency to record action potentials before and after Li2CO3 (10 and 30 µM). Li2CO3 significantly prolonged action potential duration at 20% and 90% repolarization levels.

Written by Kirsty E. Clarke, Victoria B. Christie, Andy Whiting and Stefan A. Przyborski, this review provides an overview of the use of small molecules in the control of stem cell growth and differentiation. Key signaling pathways are highlighted, and the regulation of ES cell self-renewal and somatic cell reprogramming is discussed. Compounds available from Tocris are listed.
