Bcl-2 Family

Bcl-2 family proteins contribute to programmed cell death or apoptosis. It is a large protein family and all members contain at least one of four Bcl-2 homology domains. Certain members (Bcl-2, Bcl-XL and Mcl-1) are antiapoptotic, whilst others (Bax, Bak, Bok) are proapoptotic.

Bcl-2 family proteins regulate and contribute to programmed cell death or apoptosis. They comprise a large protein family and all members contain at least one of four BH (Bcl-2 homology) domains. Certain members such as Bcl-2, Bcl-XL and Mcl-1 are antiapoptotic, whilst others (Bax, Bak, Bok) are proapoptotic.

The proapoptotic group of Bcl-2 proteins can be further sub-divided into the structurally diverse 'BH3' only proteins (including Bid, NOXA, PUMA and Bad) and the multidomain proteins that share BH1 to 3 (including Bax and Bak). Most Bcl-2 family members contain a C-terminal transmembrane domain that functions to target these proteins to the outer mitochondrial and other intracellular membranes.

The Bcl-2 gene has been linked to the development and therapeutic resistance of numerous different cancers.

Parkinson's Disease Poster

Parkinson's Disease Poster

Parkinson's disease (PD) causes chronic disability and is the second most common neurodegenerative condition. This poster outlines the neurobiology of the disease, as well as highlighting current therapeutic treatments for symptomatic PD, and emerging therapeutic strategies to delay PD onset and progression.

Programmed Cell Death Poster

Programmed Cell Death Poster

There are two currently recognized forms of programmed cell death: apoptosis and necroptosis. This poster summarizes the signaling pathways involved in apoptosis, necroptosis and cell survival following death receptor activation, and highlights the influence of the molecular switch, cFLIP, on cell fate.

Pathways for Bcl-2 Family

Apoptosis Signaling Pathway

Apoptosis Signaling Pathway

Apoptosis is a physiological process for cell death that is critical during aging and development. It may also be referred to as cell 'suicide'. Apoptosis can be triggered by events both inside and outside of the cell.
